HIGH-END FINE GRINDING (FLAT HONING)
Quality for series products or single pieces
During fine grinding, which is also known as flat honing, the workpiece is machined with a multi-blade tool in permanent contact with the workpiece. The tool consists of bonded and extremely hard abrasives – we use CBN (cubic boron nitride), the second hardest material after diamonds. Thanks to their considerably lower wear, CBN grinding wheels achieve a higher accuracy of shape and size compared to other abrasives.
While the workpiece is being processed, it rests in a carrier wheel (a satellite / rotor cage) and the material is abraded by down pressure and a rotary movement of the tool.
For fine grinding / flat honing, we use state-of-the-art fine grinding machines made by Peter Wolters, Stähli, Melchiorre and Lapmaster. These machines allow the series processing of components of a diameter from 4 mm to 800 mm. Single parts of a diameter of up to 1,500 mm can be finished with a special machine.
Fine grinding / flat honing is used especially for high-precision double-face grinding.
High-precision fine grinding / flat honing: Fine grinding straight to the point
With specially developed grinding fluids and matching CBN grinding wheels, our machines achieve removal rates of up to 400 µ per minute. Our high-precision machines furthermore deliver very high accuracy with regard to thickness tolerance.
Processing data overview:
